A parking space and an electric car are a good starting point. The next question is how to get a safe electrical supply to that space at a sensible cost. Start with the way you park
A semi in Enfield with a garage beside the meter may allow a short cable run. A converted terrace in Walthamstow could have parking at the front and the supply at the back. For a flat in Greenwich or the Barbican, the first discussion may be with the managing agent about the bay, the electricity bill and permission to use communal areas. Your address alone cannot tell an installer which arrangement will work.

What happens between the survey and the first charge?
The electrician checks the incoming supply, earthing, existing protection and the demand from appliances such as a heat pump or electric shower. They then design the circuit, agree the cable route and work out whether the network operator needs to approve anything before installation. An older fuse box does not automatically mean a full replacement; its condition and suitability need assessing.
Installation can involve drilling, outside conduit, armoured cable, trenching or a small separate distribution board. Ask who seals wall penetrations, clears waste and reinstates paving. After testing, the installer should demonstrate charging, cable storage and any app settings. Agree a temporary power interruption in advance if you work from home.
Check the paperwork as well as the wall unit
A new domestic charger circuit is notifiable work under Part P. Ask how the installer will arrange Building Regulations compliance, usually through a registered competent person scheme or the appropriate building control route. You should receive an Electrical Installation Certificate and the relevant compliance documentation. Approved Document P explains the requirements; scheme registration and electrical certification are not the same as grant authorisation.
Some properties need network work or prior approval. Ask your installer to identify the operator for your address and explain the process; UK Power Networks chargepoint guidance is a useful starting point for homes on its network. For listed buildings, shared land or an uncertain planning position, check the proposal with the relevant council and property owner.
Compare a complete price
